They could kill themselves with a heavy reboot, or something like stopping retrocompatibility, it happened in gen2>3 and that gave a huge blow in early ruby/sapphire, *lots* of people stopped playing and they were hard to regain. Hell, some have been only after Pokémon GO release

Personally, the best pokemon killer would be something that completely mimics pokemon, but has better stuff than it such as battling, mechanics and story and post-game.
