He's literally the image of a trainer. The ideal version of a trainer everyone has in their mind. This is literally all he cares about. He does what he loves to do. He's not forced to save the universe, he isn't chosen to be a hero or chases after a Green haired faggot, he doesn't have a loli he loves. He is a trainer and cares about batttles, and is dedicated to just this one thing. That's it.
It's not hard to image why he would be popular. I'd compare his popularity to that of Goku or other characters of that sort. They're simple in nature, but the dedication and how they do this one thing makes them look "cool", like a hero. At least that's my reason for liking him.
