It's better to play them in release order. This way you can see how the series progressed with each game instead of jumping around forward and backward.

SM is too different from BW2 to be related
XY already links to SM. The only way they'd get to SM is if they preferred story over gameplay features.

>Crystal
>Emerald
>Platinum
>BW
>BW2
>XY
>SM
After that you should play remakes of the games that you enjoyed the most if you feel like you want more of that stuff with updated mechanics.
