SM was excellent, and I liked the shift towards more story in the singleplayer. Great Pokemon too, I love that the bug type that was ignored before got some love this time around.
I don't hate XY but the singleplayer was very forgettable save for the Lysandre labs area, and much of the Pokemon designs were kind of forgettable, although there were some great ones like Trevenant, Dragalge, and Clauncher. Great online though.

What?
Best on 3DS is a big maybe, but holy shit Sun/Moon were the largest steps back in terms of gameplay.
We lost four types of battles(inverse among them, despite there being no reason to do so like hardware limitations), we lost a lasting core mechanic with the national dex, half the megastones are locked behind early access "competitions", the world is pitifully small and STILL manages to have a cutscene every 20 seconds, and worst of all the fucking plaza is the most tedious means of wifi connection yet.

Plot is subjective but Sun/Moon's plot isn't worth losing easy wifi connection and the fucking pokedex.

It's really a shame that the X/Y rot is getting worse with S/M in the sense that we'll never get a fun/memorable single player campaign again.

I'll say it like I did in the last one of these spammed threads.
Different target audience and the games have shifted in gameplay. Some people like it, some don't. The old style of skeleton plot is gone in favor of story singleplayer.
The only significant factor on future titles is that the majority of people and new players (i.e. teenagers and gofags) loved the story focused singleplayer and the characters like Lillie. It sells.
If you don't like it, go play a romhack I guess. The games cater to the most profitable audience, and that's the people who liked SM now. Just let it go man, there's nothing you can do, you're part of a very small vocal section of the fanbase that only exists on /vp/ and subsections of gamefaqs.

If story singleplayer is the focus why didn't get we get a proper singleplayer?
Instead of telling an actual story it's just constantly railroading the player from cutscene to cutscene. Exploration element is entirely gone and theres very little reward for leaving the beaten path.
The national dex is gone, and even the collection element has been severely cut down.

It's really lack of a story they like, and more than they like the story mode being less a story and more a visual novel.

People like what they like, and that's SM's story, and if you don't you're in a minority as far as reception goes. I can't explain everyone else for me. Don't buy the games if you don't like them, idk. The people they're selling to buy them anyway regardless of how much the changes in gameplay irk you.
I didn't even mind it that much, so personally all I can say is that I enjoyed the game for what it was and didn't expect it to be like the older titles in the franchise.

I don't, it was nice having an established protag rather than the blank slate one in all the other games, I play EO when I want blank slate characters to adventure with, and besides, it's not like they forced your Pokemon to have set personalities. XY did have a story though, I'm tired of idiots trying to pass it off as the same as gen 4 and prior in terms of plot. It was just done VERY awkwardly except for AZ's section about the war.

I just liked SM more because there wasn't an abhorrent focus on giving the player a shitload of overpowered gift Pokemon like in XY and at least Poni island picked up the slack in levels.

XY have a better story than SM simply by the virtue of not being as prominent and forced.

XY have better level design, not by much, but it's still better. Alola is far too small, streamlined and lacking in aptitude for exploration.

XY have better content. Poké Finder and Festival Plaza are both some of the worst features we've had yet on the account of being immensely grindy, and in the case of the latter, also extremely luck-dependant. I know people love the Poké Pelago because they're either lazy or busy, but it's still literally just waiting, which is a bad thing.

I'm not happy with XY. I'm not trying to say they were good. I felt disappointed and unsatisfied with them. But they're still better than the absolute, nigh-irredeemable Sun and Moon.

Again, doesn't really matter. Relatively speaking SM did a good job of including characters from past gens. I'd argue the opposite, that there are too many old ones meaning GF didn't have to be creative and come up with new characters.

Sold pretty well in most places it was available though, and the normalfags that bought it enjoyed it from what I've seen. Go helped it a lot in sales actually, I can't say all the sales it got are purely on its own merits.

XY were significantly worse in every regard, with maybe the exception of horde battles

The games looked awful, the region was mostly forgettable with a few exceptions, chibi was horrible, plot was the most asinine it had ever been. In my opinion XY were the worst games in the series.

There's actual evidence in the game, not just people saying it. In one of the Aether Labs, there is a book on a shelf detailing how a researcher named "Mohn" pioneered the study of ultra wormholes. He disappeared, and the research was continued by the Aether Foundation. Mohn also bears striking resemblances to Gladion and Lillie, and one of them mentions a "Mohn" to the player in a conversation. Unless Mohn is just a really common name, chances are that's what happened. Also Nihilego's toxin removes human inhibition and messes with minds.

I've played both games. I played X and then I struggled to play Y because I was so bored with Kalos. Meanwhile I played Sun once and Moon twice with no problem. Sun and Moon are far better. Most X/Y characters to me are forgettable, and I don't even remember all the Gym Types.

Doesn't happen. As far as the game is concerned, you never saw that Aether Report and don't know their father's name was Mohn.

Besides as flawed as XY was it really ignited the hype in Pokemon fans and it lasted quite long even after the XY release. Sun and Moon hype died very quickly after the release. There's just NOTHING to do in this game bar online battles.

Indeed, but the original thing I was trying to state was that there was in-game evidence that Mohn instigated the plot. In those reports, talks with Gladion and the lab assistant, and the main storyline, it's pretty easy to connect the details. Mohn was lost to an ultra wormhole, leaving behind a Cosmog (this is from a different piece of info). Lusamine's family fell apart from that point due to her obsession.
