Gay animals seem to be an indicator of this as well, since only humans and dolphins (for the most part) have sex for pleasure. Homosexuality has a more functional use than say, schizophrenia, so saying it's a mental illness seems a bit much. It's more of a hormonal deficiency, since finger-length (affected by testosterone) is associated closely with it.
