Do people really think the formula was significantly changed just because they changed the name from "Gym" to "Trial" in these games?

The gameplay structure around trials didn't really change at all as you still progressed by passing them the same way you did with gyms

The way things worked WITHIN trials was vastly different from Gyms, and I personally liked the atmosphere and gameplay mechanics better in trials.

Agreed. Here's what I would have wanted to see more of out of trials:

>Totem pokemon are not actually trained by the trial captains, but picked by the Tapu like Kahuna. The trial captains simply tend to the Totems and occasionally bring a pokemon to a kahuna who then brings it to a tapu for evaluation*
>Trials are expressly (at least mentioned) as different for everyone who goes through them, so one person's experience will be vastly different**
>'Optional' trials you can do as either post game content or just side content in general
>**The second ties into a pie-in-the-sky dream where the game has three versions of each trial, one is randomly picked for you to go through each playthrough to change the experiences of each player and for each playthrough
>*the first would tie into a post-game where you can train up an appropriately typed pokemon and then offer them to the Tapu as the new totem
>Then you get to fight that perfect IV, nature, shiny Tsareena you raised with it's speed and attack stats maximized via Totem Boost!

well, adding a bit to this:

I think it's more that Gamefreak has shown they are willing to change at least a little bit, and this opens the door for potentially something even more different than the usual, or dropping other things that have been series staples.
I mean, they probably won't, and we'll all complain again about whatever comes next, but we can hope. And what is man, without hope?

The idea of a buffed boss Pokemon was neat but then they fucked it all up by making the pre-totem fights garbage one mon fights which was a direct downgrade from having trainers with multiple mons in a gym

they gave up making decent gym puzzles ages ago so they just cut them entirely so they could save time and make you do the tedious bullshit on a random bit of over world instead

Trials and gyms dont work the same way though. Gyms where just buldingd with puzzles whereas trials are more like missions where you cant leave or you lose your progress. That and totem mons are a tad different as its one strong mon+varying minions instead of fixed minions and one stronger mon. Lore wise they're also different as some routes are blocked explicitly because of them rather than writing around the need to complete gyms in order. Its a bigger change than just name but whether that counts as significant is arguable and I cant really argue against any side on that.

That said, I dont thinj there was anything wrong with the gym formula per se, as it was simple enough to be flexible.

Only in the sense that you only fought three Pokémon total, instead of around 3-10 Trainers with entire teams of Pokémon. So basically Trials are inferior Gyms in every sense.
