He was genki retard except he was not retard and all and was perfectly self-aware of how he behaved and the image he projected to people and his genki retard facade was his way to cope and evade people's expectations of him for being Hala's grandson.

I expected to hate him but he ended up being a pretty decently written character. Seeing him get frustrated when he couldn't beat you, the league Champion, was amazing because it was a realization for him that he actually wanted to git gud and be the best but wasted too much time escaping from people's expectations so he fell behind.

They were all annoying, but there was only one of them in SM instead of multiple (Gladion is an actual rival for once and Lillie is just bland waifu bait) so it annoyed you less just because of the lower quantity.
