I know that the games are over a decade old now but this feel still haunts me from time to time

I never went there...

I will never have the sense of closure of knowing I beat every area of my first pokemon game

It's not the same, but I would suggest downloading VisualboyAdvance and a copy of Fire Red or Leaf Green, then using the built-in gameshark to hack your way to the island. Best way to get there is use the code that lets you buy the tickets at a PokéMart.

Of course you'll have to play probably up to the National Dex, but FRLG are better games than SM anyway, so it will be fun at least.

You can still do it Anon. You can get FRLG and Emerald on the 3DS very easily, and use PKHex to get the tickets. I'm replaying LeafGreen right now and I'm THIS close to getting the Sapphire, the final mission before you can finally use the tickets. I'm very excited about this, because I never went there as a kid either.

Well, since the 11.3 version is still fairly new, there's been no firmware downgrade hack released for it YET. So you'd have to wait until that gets released. However, once it does, all you have to do is the following:

1) Follow this guide ( https://3ds.guide/ ) in order to get CFW (it will be updated for 11.3 once a downgrade hack is out).

2) Find a ROM of the GBA game you'd like to play (just use Google). The file should be in .gba format.

3) Edit the ROM with a hex-editing program (Notepad++ for example has a hex-editing plugin) following this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-fix-all-save-problems-for-pok%C3%A9mon-games-vc-gba.433266/

4) Use the program "Ultimate GBA VC Injector for 3DS" to convert your edited ROM to .cia format (there's a lot of settings, but you can ignore most of it really. Just open your .gba file with the program and click Next, give your game a short name, long name, publisher name and a game icon and click Next, give it a banner icon and a banner name and click Next, tick the SRAM patch box and click Finish).

5) Put your new .cia file on your 3DS' SD card and use FBI (which you get during Step 1) to install the game!

Step 1, once possible, will be the most difficult one to do. You can use Google, YouTube and hacking generals here on /vp/ to get help if you need it. Step 2-5 however should only take max 30 minutes to do. Once that is done and you've made a save file in the game, export your save file and use PKHex to give yourself the event items.

as an ausfag, it was absolute suffering knowing that there was an entire festival going across the entirety of america that handed out free pokemon, but nothing even close to that down here.

That's probably why, when I had Emerald for homebrew it would lag on my n3ds but when I got it for cfw it doesn't lag anymore.
