Up until worlds there was nobody using M-Gyara to any success and it had already fallen out of favour very early in the year. The whole Mega Evo meta objectively revolved around Khan, Mawile, Char-Y with the occasional splattering of Venusaur here and there.
Gothitelle was a fringe pick at best because it was so difficult to make it's trapping ability worth the effort despite many people trying but it worked for Sejun because of some godly reads. Pachirisu was at best a novelty support that fit a specific niche but you can't really shit on it because it really was a complete workhorse in the final using it's full moveset practically.
There is always going to be unsung heroes in each year but some are always going to have more spotlight and that shouldn't be a reason to shit on accomplishments.
I don't see anyone singing about Bronzong in '16 despite the fact it was the one year it was more relevant than Cress to the point of being everywhere by the end. Or how the one UK player took a Volcarona all the way to the final without any Primal in their team.
Let's not forget how Hydreigon managed to stay relevant in '14 the year of 'Fairy x4 weakness' even placing highly or that highest performing Rotom form ended up being the near never seen Cut form.
Or that the Japanese completely raped the rest of the world with a near perfect domination in '15 the supposedly most competitive full National dex.
