My take is that Persian is a bakeneko, a logical step up from a beckoning cat in my book. Bakeneko are normal cats that become magical over time, have slightly altered characteristics and get very big. Persian is a pretty solid take on that, especially for a normal type. And a design native to a mostly Japan-oriented generation.
I can understand an evolution being disappointing, even if it does follow a trend. Huh, I wonder if something like that could happen as recently as Gen 7?
