Not doing sound after all.
Just Normal/Dragon for The Order through Harmony legendary and Dark/Ground for the Chaos through Discord legendary.
Harmony gets a Dragon type Sound based move that like Knock off. (Peace, laying down your arms and all that shit)
The Discord legendary gets a Sound based Dark type move that does something....I still haven't gotten that one yet.

in this case, let the definition of a small project be one of the following:

a) visually updating a single route, not changing trainers or events or anything regarding game mechanics
b) adding new pokemon, creating the sprites from scratch and maybe even adding a new ability
c) modifying the overall map, adding a new location and creating isolated events local only to that location

So, I'm at an impasse. How do I get that cosmic horror story, Lovecraftian feel while also staying true to the catch em all, unstoppable hero of pokemon without being edgy?
The main plot is the same as Fire Red.
The sub plot revolves around the glitch pokemon from Gen 1 and a shady organization called Team Oblivion that seems to be connected to them.

B. Major fucking difficulty spike here. Even I haven't figured out how to make a custom ability with a whole new effect, that's hex stuff. Obtuse and nigh impossible for someone who isn't already a tech wiz. Inserting sprites RIGHT is moderately difficult/tedious, editing pokemon is pretty easy, though making a new cry seems hard
C. Again, super easy. Advancemap is the only intuitive program in the goddamn romhacking lineup, very user friendly. XSE, the scripting program for events, etc. is a little weird at first, but pretty easy once you learn it.

Also, you battle this guy aka Corrupted Future!Red when you get pulled into the Glitch Dimension. "Missingno.", the handle for all glitch pokemon, has taken over the entire Gen 1 universe. It is corrupted beyond comprehension. I REALLY want this to feel Lovecraftian.
Like when you first visit Bill's house, out of nowhere, a glitch pokemon appears and battles you. Team Oblivion shows up like Men in Fucking Black (Grey) and whites you out. You wake up back in Cerulean, but Bill's house is blocked by an NPC talking about the weather or some shit.

You know what other game had missingno. possess/impersonate people? Pokemon Adventure: Red chapter, and that shitty subplot was easily the worst part of the game because he went off the rails of the Pokemon Adventure manga and started up a shitty missigno subplot, which might've been fine but he executed it so shittily and edgily that it was terrible.

And wasn't that subplot like post game shit anyway? I'm doing an entire remake of Kanto (using Gen 4/5 graphics and mechanics) that's set in a similar, but different timeline. It's all in the previous thread.
Also, the Glitch pokemon plot and the main plot are interwoven, hencemy desire to get a Lovecraftian mood.

Well, the context is Team Oblivion members are all unknown as they wear cloaks like Organization 13. Only in the climax (lol that word always seems sexual to me) is it revealed that they are dopplegangers of the best trainers in Kanto. Gym Leaders and what not.
They came from Gen.1 to escape its destruction by MissingNo. The whole thing is meta. The Old Man glitch from Gen 1 and how saving Missingno.and M to your file would permanently corrupt it.
Well, the file is that universe, Gen 1.
Champion Red and the Elite Four stayed behind to combat the threat.Team Oblivion wants to take Missingno.-an Eldritch, shapeless, reality warping virulent entity and give it form so that it can be cut off from its powers and be subjected to the rules of reality.
Anyway, it seems like me making Red being a glitch Boss is so bothersome to you. Is it because its Red? Would it bother you if Lance was the boss? Or Hiker Fatass? Or Lass Thundercunt? Or Youngster who gives a fuck?

The Glitch corrupts people, places, and pokemon. Team Oblivion is supposed to come off as shady at first. They show up when the glitches happen and they seem to know everything about Red and they have advanced technology and shit ABD they even use some Glitch pokemon to battle. The reveal actually shows that they are good guys trying to stop Missing no. But the way they are trying to stop it-by trying to summon it to the world and bind it in a vessel-is still questionable. They're like antiheroes really.

How would you expand Kanto? The mainland seems so small compared to other regions. There aren't many buffer towns between gym cities. Lavender town is the only town without a gym out of 8 gym cities, 1 starter town, and the pokemon league hq.

Check out Bulbapedia's page on Kanto, add in a load of locations from the anime. Bear in mind Kanto only had two seasons (the first and Battle Frontier) and they were a lot more focused so there's not 89274997490 anime only locations like with Johto.

Yes, I enjoy playing Pokemon fangames, and I liek to share them by posting on /vp/. I've noticed a lot of people squander good ideas and concepts with piss-poor execution or contamination with fuckign awful ideas, so I like to take an interest in developing fangames to offer input.

You hit a lot of fucking awful red flags. The only advice I'm really giving you is to play other fangames that already have used ideas similar to yours you you can see what they might look like to a player. If you won't even do that, I recommend no one reply to you from now on.

My Assentials project is a remake, sort of, of my old one from 2015 before I moved on to ROMhacking. It's Assentials GS, which I know bothers some people, but whatever. Here's a plot synopsis:

Bascially, there's a meteor named the Wistaria Meteor which split into pieces centuries ago. The main part, the Burst Core, fell into a lake in a forest, which is now guarded by the (professor-type character) Dr. Mantle. The other pieces, known as Burst Stars, were scattered across the region. The Wistaria Meteor holds lots of energy from space, and if it is reassembled, it could create endless destruction.

Also, instead of Gyms, there's a tournament named the Wistaria Tournament. The player and their rival travel the region, searching for the Burst Stars while challenging the tournament.

The Nebula Gang are also searching for Burst Stars, as they want to assemble the Wistaria Meteor, recieve unlimited energy which will allow them to travel around space. This is because the boss's family were astronauts who disappeared in space. Even though they are most likely gone, he still wants to find them. That's all he lives for.

So, is it good, awful or just okay?

As for Rx, it's the same as almost every other legendary. Mama Zona "dies" her core is taken and implanted with the other two and RX is brought to life. This is end game stuff. Player uses Rx to cure the infection of Viramite.

No. Their cores are taken for their power and information. But Rx still needed the Control Core from Mama Zona to be awakened. When Mama Zona is revived, she creates new Lukombo and Lukeeto.

Drayano's Blaze Black 1 and 2 are okay. Add difficulty. Basically a curve hack (not necessarily "hard" but it was very hard to me) and hacks Pokémon availability too. Those are the most extensive Gen 5 hacks. Following Pokémon and similar, nope. Hacking is limited. DS hacking even more so.

Every couple years I have a hankering to play some Pokemon. The last Romhack I played and really fell in love with was Omega Emerald; I loved the extra Pokemon, the difficulty, the small improvements to certain Pokemon and the level curve. I'm feeling that hankering to play again and I may just re-download Omega Emerald, but are there any others I should consider? Been playing around with the idea of making a RB hack, always felt Gen I to be comfier than their Gen III remakes, although it does limit me to what tools are available. I got linked to the pokered github early on though, so thanks to the people over in the discord chat for that.

Reason why I wanted to make a hack to begin with was just to balance out the base stats, movepools and typings of various mons in order to create more viable choices but just in general increase the difficulty of in-game trainers. I've been told to include some sort of new/different plot just to make the game more refreshing to play, and I feel inclined to agree, but apart from fleshing out the Mewtwo story once you've beaten the E4, I'm unsure of what to do since I don't feel like remapping all of the dialogue already present in the game. If people know of hacks who have already explored that route, do link me, I haven't personally found much.

I'm an artist at heart though, hence why I'm currently stuck repolishing the Pokemon sprites using existing sprites as a base.

this dude here. So far i tried to us the isp files in the pastbin for adding the physical special split and fairy typing but neither worked? Applying the physical special split made my rom unable to load and made nightmarish glitch screeches like the ones my ds used to make if my ruby cartridge was just barely not in place.
The fairy type patch worked fine until i got to the rival battle where the game automatically reset itself after oak does is old " you've never battled before" speech.
What am i doing wrong? do i need a specific version of the firered rom?

New NPCs would also be nice. The Team Rocket Executives from HG/SS, the female protagonist from FR/LG, Eusine (he lives in Celadon City), anime references (I mean the kind of thing Yellow did, like the people who give you all the starters)...

Also, I agree about Gen 1 (and Gen 2) being "comfier", but Gen 1 had a bunch of battle engine glitches and unbalanced weirdness that you could fix. (Like, does *anyone* miss the 1/256 miss chance for all moves, or Focus Energy doing the opposite of what it says?)

One of the worst things I've ever seen was in Pokemon Adventure: Red Chapter. Every, and I mean EVERY trainer past the 8th gym has 4 full restores. It isn't even difficult, it's just tedious as hell, it becomes a game of "how can I beat this thing without getting its health to red", and it seems like every hit gets the health to red.

99.99% of all hacking resources for fire red are for 1.0, which IIRC is the one that doesn't say "Gamefreak presents" when booted. Some things in the later version were relocated to different parts of the ROM, so patches for 1.0 won't work on it.

These are the files you can copy and rename directly:

maps/name.blk → maps/name.blk
gfx/tilesets/name.2bpp.lz → gfx/tilesets/name.2bpp
tilesets/name_metatiles.bin → gfx/blocksets/name.bst

You'll need to create tilesets/name.tilecoll yourself. I don't know how pokered collision data works, but it's different from pokecrystal's tilesets/name_collision.bin. And you'll have to modify the tilesets that use too many tiles for pokered (not many do, just things that Crystal extended like the Burned Tower or Ice Path).

And yes, considering Gen 7 finally got the idea and made the actual antagonists a Foundation with a somewhat realistic premise, I hate everything which still insists on falling back on the old "poor translation of the -dan suffix" mold.

But I do agree that anyone who takes Christfag stuff seriously should be castrated without anaesthetic, have a bit of salt rubbed in the wound, and then publicly executed. Maybe by guillotine, they do make for a good show.

I should probably clarify that I'm the guy who always posts music ported to Gen 2's engine. I do post my junk on a forum and in the Discord, and I do receive positive remarks, but never much criticism. I always feel like I'm too complacent regarding the quality of my songs.

I suppose I could try other forums, but I don't think my type of resource would fit in the Pokécommunity resource subforum, since it's all Gen 3 stuff and the resources seem to all be distributed via patch. I'm not sure how many people on Pokécomm even know the disassemblies are a thing, and I don't know how to answer people who would want to inject it into a traditionally-hacked ROM. Maybe I'll make a thread anyway, it might get others more interested in music hacking.

So i added a patch that adds gen 4-7 pokemon to the game, but it fucked up squirtle's learned moves (it has nothing as a starter) but whenever i try to open the rom in a program that lets you edit pokemon data i get these errors. is there any way to fix these errors and still keep the new pokemon?

A lot of these kinds of patches are glitchy as hell, but I think some tools also require a special file that tells them offsets to everything so it can read the data correctly. I don't know too much about this kind of thing though.

As someone who's following in Gen 7's footsteps in regards to this I am fucking terrified every day people will be anal about it and drop the whole hack over it when in my case it's not even 10% of the dex. Do it anyway. If you try real hard and let the idea morph itself into something sensible and coherent even if it changes a lot from your original concept you can at least satisfy yourself. Who knows, maybe you'll surprise yourself with the results.

I think that's been done in Gaia, IIRC there are different coloured flower patches with different Pokemon in them. Either way it'd definitely be doable with an ASM routine.

I ultimately did decide to change up the section that destroyed the flow of this song, replacing the cacophonic screech in the background of the original with a delayed echo. It definitely sounds relatively better.

Not sure if this is the place to ask this, but I'm trying to use Ultimate GBA VC Injector to put YAFRRH on my o3DS. The GBC one worked excellently for prism but this one doesnt seem to. Ive used all the default settings for FR excpet the RTC which wasn't checked originially, and adding the IPS patch both through the program and through Lunar. Any thoughts on why it doesnt work?

Viramort -- Pathomort -- Contagimort
Viratron -- Pathotron -- Contagitron (If he's eletric)
Viragon -- Pathogon -- Contagigon (If he's dragon)
etc.

The "mort" suffix is related to death, so as edgy as you might think it is, it's actually related.

Rom hacks are the best. Unfortunately I cannot ASM and make Trainer Class based music in Fire Red, or get Sappy to work and add more music files to the game.
I am terrible at spriting too, so this is really stopping me from continuing my own hack.
The only thing I can do is XSE and a bit of mapping with the default tiles.

Gen 5 hacking is available, you just need motivation if you want to do it. Lots of motivation. Look at that beta for Light Platinum DS, someone created new maps with events and route connections and everything important in HGSS. It's absolutely doable, you just have to be prepared to solve tough challenges and possibly new frontiers that others haven't crossed yet.

Everything that can be easily done nowadays in ROMhacks, at one point, was just as far away in the POV of the first person to do it as you are from making your Gen 5 hack, and those people all succeeded.

It definitely is. I remember someone porting a few Hoenn maps to BW2 a year or so ago, though they lost interest quickly and the project soon died. I can't seem to find the thread for it now.

I managed to take it down eventually. A good rock type was all I really needed, plus potions and antidotes to heal through the wrap and toxic damage. Thank fuck it didn't have a worse moveset than this though, rest instead of protect would've been a nightmare, or heaven forbid double team.

I shudder to think what Whitney's Miltank is going to be like now. Watch that bitch be exactly the same only with Double-Edge and maybe something like Earthquake instead of Rollout. Though it may just have Rollout since it's not like that move has gotten any less dangerous at higher levels.

I literally just use Sony Vegas (but audacity probably works as well or even better) and sample random sound effects. It works surprisingly well and it only takes like 10 minutes to make a cry (give or take depending on complexity/obscurity)

Pretty much this >>32247361. Managing the code and editing the parts of a whole makes the process much more easily customizeable and stable. It just requires assembly knowledge, and lots of patience while you sit through tons of code that barely makes sense. If you've never programmed before (or don't feel like learning z80 asm) this isn't really an option to start with. Try Essentials in that case, or start on a smaller project.

I'm the guy you're replying too and I don't think it requires programming knowledge at all unless you want to add custom code that would require knowing assembly either way. Everything is laid out so neatly and there are so many macros that it's just a matter of copying the existing structure of other things and changing the details to what you want (i.e. if you wanted to add a new Pokémon, you'd look where all the Pokémon data is and add another entry to each file that has the data).

I guess that works as well, it's just that at the point when you'll want to do things the engine doesn't already do, you're going to have a hard time getting it to do that. I don't know how Essentials works but I'd guess it makes that easier.

I've been thinking I might be interested in creating a simple engine with current-gen battle mechanics (would probably look into showdown code/data for this) and a simple overworld/other essential things, mostly focussing on configurability (the ability to change the mechanics to those of any gen would be interesting, as well as different menus from each gen and such) and ease of modification. Just thinking about writing it in clean, readable C and making it scriptable with Lua gets my dick hard. Will probably never get around to it, though.
