I think I got most of the pokemania experience other than the trading cards
I started out with the anime+collectables (I had hundreds of tazo disks) and didn't play any of the games until I was ~12 and knew enough english to set up an emulator and actually understand what people are saying (started with RBY and worked my way up to the then current game)
went back and bought them legit when I was ~17, pretty dumb since I didn't hold any nostalgia for the physical consoles and cartridges but I was really into retro gaming at the time and I had just started my first job so I had disposable income
as for Yu-Gi-Oh, I remember it came out when I was between 2nd and 3rd grade, 1 week after I got hit by a car. I spent like a month hospitalised and watching Ygo, dropped it after season 3
