Were early 2000s kids into Pokemon or did they just miss the boat and were more into stuff like Yu Gi Oh?

if you mean 93-96, I was born 95 and jumped in during the gen 2 hype, like most kids I knew so there were a lot of us.
Due to trading cards being a common medium, yugioh actually helped pokemon along a little, we'd trade pokemon cards and yugioh cards interchangeably like uncivilized savages.

I'm 22 and only watched some of the anime when I was in early school, didn't play Yu Gi Oh but I saw a lot of kids did.

I started playing Pokemon games when I was 12 when my friend put roms on my USB.

1999 here I got a mix of everything Digimon ,beyblade, pokemon, and yu gi oh. only things that stuck were pokemon and digimon though

96 here, It was a mix. I remember Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Beyblade all co-existing at the same time. I wouldn't say they missed the boat, look at all the hype Hoenn got when the remakes were announced. It was just nowhere near as big as the first two generations due to the older fans growing out of the series and all the diversity. Majority of the people that played gen 3 started with that and got their fix of the other two gens from FRLG and GSC thanks to the SP's compatibility. The card game got a boost from Yu-Gi-Oh as well.

I'm a '98 kid. I got into Pokémon around my first 4 years of life (I don't know how, most probably thanks to the anime). I started to play in 2005 with Emerald and I haven't looked back ever since. I think it is the franchise that has defined me the most.

The first two gens came out in '99 and '01 here so obviously kids from early 90's was on the pokemon hype train.
It pretty much died out with gen III though.

Was already into Pokemon when the mania hit the US. Blue was the first game I played and Crystal was the first I owned. A lot of friends at school were into it too.

I think I got most of the pokemania experience other than the trading cards
I started out with the anime+collectables (I had hundreds of tazo disks) and didn't play any of the games until I was ~12 and knew enough english to set up an emulator and actually understand what people are saying (started with RBY and worked my way up to the then current game)
went back and bought them legit when I was ~17, pretty dumb since I didn't hold any nostalgia for the physical consoles and cartridges but I was really into retro gaming at the time and I had just started my first job so I had disposable income
as for Yu-Gi-Oh, I remember it came out when I was between 2nd and 3rd grade, 1 week after I got hit by a car. I spent like a month hospitalised and watching Ygo, dropped it after season 3

I was born in 1994 and I started playing Gen 1. I used to play with my friends and cousins all the time and I had a lot of the cards, some of which I still have today. I liked Yu-Gi-Oh too but that was much later than Pokémon.

1989. Been with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh since their very beginnings. Lucky to have been able to have access to loads of anime pretty earlier on, even though I had no idea it was called anime or originated from Nipland. Never got big into Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards though, but I dabbled a bit.

I will continue to say a number of factors caused pokemon to decline. Number 1 is the fanbase was getting older, becoming teenagers. It was no longer cool to like pokemon. 2 is seasonal rot, attributed to the anime. Yes, the anime is that influential to the fanbase, or at least it was at the time. When it became dull, the fandom left with it. 3 is simply the way our culture works. No matter how big a fad is, it will always die. All of these happened WITHIN the second gen. I think any other excuses are nonsense.

My nostalgia begins with Crystal and a see-through GBC I had, though I have the strongest for Sapphire, which I have the best memories for seeing as how that was the one I actually beat.

I definitely remember being crazy for the Yu-Gi-Oh show, and somehow acquiring a deck of mostly japanese cards that I could not make heads or tails of. Never got into Pokemon cards, though.

As for competition, I think Digimon's anime started before the second gen was released here, but Yugioh would not be dubbed until some years later. Monster Rancher also occurred sometime in this time slot. Pokemon was always considered the premier monster franchise, though, so I think that had little to do with it.

91 here; all of my friends who played pokemon during the pokemainia days either stopped playing the game or jumped ship to yugioh when the craze started to die down.

Funnily enough I got into yugioh as a side thing later on and began beating them at it with barely any experience despite that they had been playing it for at least a year beforehand

Interesting. All the pokemon kids in my city switched to Magic: The Gathering, Dragonball (both Z and regular plain old Dragonball without the Z, oddly enough) and quit the pokemon video games for Final Fantasy sequels and Fire Emblem (Smash Bros. got them interested and they got really into it). This was just before and a little bit after Gen 3 started. I think I was the only one who bothered with Leaf Green and Emerald versions. Hell, I'm not sure anyone else was even playing Ruby or Sapphire.

Pretty much no one was into Yugioh where I lived except for some guys at the card store that didn't go to my school and were really insular.

Outside of myself, only three other people in my entire neighborhood ever got any of the gen 2 games when there were at least 2 or 3 dozen that played the gen 1 ones. None of those three got any gen 3 games. No one had ever heard of or played MtG, or at least as far as I know since no one had ever mentioned it ever including up to today. DB and DBZ were extremely popular too.

I did meet four other people in middle school who played the games and also had gen 3. Had gotten three of the four into pokemon netbattle which is basically the showdown equivalent from the early/mid 2000s. No idea if they still play now though. They sadly all ended up moving away in 2005 and 2006, havent found anyone that played since then

The '92-'96s kids tend to be the only ones who associate Pokemon heavily with the 90s. Everyone older saw it as a prelude to the 00s and everyone younger wasn't around in the 90s.

I was more into Pokémon and Bakugan than anything else, and when I saw the gen 4 anime I kind of got bored of Pokémon (I didn't have a Pokémon game til 2011 with SoulSilver.)

So my answer is that I got turned off from Pokémon by gen 4 and got hooked back in by chance (Some of my friends in middle school were very much into it.)

Bakugan was the big one for me, though. I had those instead of Pokémon trading cards.
