Unwritten rule: protags always wear hats. Not wearing a hat makes them cursed.
I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but protags look best when they conform to traditional gender roles. Only sick degenerates want femboy protags and pretty much no one wants to play as a butch little girl.

Bonus points if they dress sorta like the pokemon they train, like bird trainers wearing biker jackets with those little leather pieces hanging down that look sorta like feathers, or fishermen wearing orange shirts to resemble Magikarp. Don't go too overboard with that, though, except maybe pokemaniacs, they're like furfag, let them literally wear Charizard and Pikachu costumes.
