I don't understand this whole XY Ash had no personality thing. I really don't. He had the same personality as all other Ashs, with the annoying parts toned down heavily. His default emotion is still happiness, he still gets angry at Team Rocket and such, he love Pokemon and gets sparkling eyes for them, he still loves traveling and seeing new places, he still loves battles. He's literally the same.
The only differences I could tell were that he didn't scream loudly all the time. He still screamed, a lot, but not all the time. And he didn't make too many irrational decisions. He still did that, but less often. He was a lot more focused on winning the League this time. Still goofed off a lot, but that was always presented to be the thing on his mind. That, and because Bonnie was young and Serena thought of Ash as a God, and Shota was pretty much Ash's fan, Ash got to act like an adult figure for both of them, giving his thoughts to things and looking after them, acting like a role model at times. This hasn't happened before, because all other characters thought of Ash as a friend more than anything. Max had a few moments like this, but he was usually more knowledgeable than Ash.
Other than these small changes and add ions, Ash was the same he's been for years now.
