What about the episode May tried to protect her Bulbasaur in the ep all the rampaging grass pokemon were attacking her? What about the Wynaut episode where May saved Drew from drowning and didn't take credit for saving his life? What about the Swablu episode where she nurses and injured pokemon back to health for the first time?
What about the various tag battle eps she had with Ash where they had a battle of the sexes argument in, "The Bicker, The Better," or the episode she and Meowth time traveled in Battle Frontier, the ones where she defending the Munchlax she captured from a bunch of children. There was also the Numel farm episode where she learned to take care of others and have a backbone.
And this is outside of the Contest eps, where a lot of her development came form her interactions with her rivals, and not just talking about Drew/Harley, but all those one-shot rivals from Hoenn.
