The part about taking pride is correct, but not when and the reason.
Some time ago, when the leaked design were confirmed indirectly when they revealed mallow, is when the starter wars began.
People were dumbfounded, the design looked like shit.
In particular, Beltigre/Inceniroar was immediatly, and rightfully, shitted as a terrible looking bara-bait, Poppomaid/Primarina looked like, also rightfully, as a cheap excuse for a waifu.
But, out of all the design, Robinroot/Decidueye, this time incorrectly, looked like the best of the bunch, despite looking like a school shooter, the edgy owl had at least something to his design, particularly the Robin Hood vibes, that wasn't so bad.
So in this moment a lot of people started liking the owl.
When the final design were released, and Decidueye came out as an edgy muppet, most of its following go away, leaving only those that had too much pride shilling it.
In the end all three the design are atrocious, and it's been talked a lot, so there isn't much to say about them.
Tl;Dr Those who still say Decidueye is the only good start are those who liked the initial, leaked, design, and that didn't change when the actual one was released.
