ash-pikachu in general is worse than regular pikachu because it can't run moves like encore, nasty plot and surf. apparently it also comes with static, so you can't even get a free +1 off electric attacks

I'd say Zen Mode is worse, because it's not an inferior variation, but something that requires you to stat a Pokemon the wrong way in order to be rewarded with a form that isn't even that good.

zen mode should work a bit like stance change:

use a physical attack --> change to normal form
use a special attack --> change to zen mode

having to be half-dead to start using special attacks was a terrible idea
