She had a detailed past, one that didn't involve any bullshit and everything made sense. That past was what defined her character, personality and even her looks, like it should. She had things going on in her life that didn't involve you. She had flaws in her character that she had to overcome, which she does by learning from those around her. And those flaws weren't that she was just stupid or a dick, unlike literally every character in series prior to her, barring maybe Bianca. Those flaws were her weakness, but they didn't make her an unlikable or unrealistic person. She wasn't pitied or favored by others for her flaws, rather criticized in story, like any normal person would be.
Because she was not made to be an idiot. she recognized her flaws. She knew that her criticism wasn't just people being retarded. Because she was aware of her flaws, she was grateful to anyone who put up with them, and felt bad that they had to. In return, she treated them as nicely as she could, putting them before her own safety. She had people, Pokemon and things she cared about. Despite being weak, both mentally and physically, she was still willing to do anything to not put those close to her in danger. She had goals in her life, realistic goals that someone in her situation would have. She worked towards them to best of her abilities.
She had connections to people who weren't you. Her goal didn't involve you. Her past didn't involve you. She had a life that wasn't about you. Her character arc wasn't about just you. Her life did end up being affected by you, but it wasn't just you. You played just a single part. Unlike literally every character prior to her.
