Compared to "it just gets bigger", it's an high risk high reward kind of situation, I guess, where it may disappoint some people but also impress a lot more the ones who like it.
I completely respect your opinion, although I don't have any problem with Primarina's slenderness at all, but who knows what would have happened if the evolution was more masculine, neutral, fat or more similar looking to Popplio? It basically saved the Sea Lion for being the most bullied starter ever, a lot of its fans are happy about it, so it's really hard to see a better evolution for the line, despite the changes it goes through.
I honestly can't see myself liking a starter line where the final evolution ends up being what I expect, so I hope this line of thinking continues in the future games, as long as it's pulled off well.
