If the dialogue makes it unclear who is being referred to, you would have to know what the JP names are, but unless you are a weeaboo, there is no reason to not use the localized names if they exist when doing a translation or talking about it online. It's easier to just directly use the JP names? Maybe for translation purposes, but for discussion, people are going to use the name they are more familiar with. Unless you go to a community that strictly only uses Japanese names, the localized ones will be more familiar. The anime community has always been that way? You may have me there, but I do not recall a moment in either XY or SM where people referred to any of the game native characters by anything other than the localized names. COTD and anime unique characters, yes, they will always be deferred to by their JP names. Perhaps for all time because their dub names are often shitty.
