You're thinking about it in the context of a human vs a bird. Pokemon is about magic super powered animals fighting, so a more apt comparison would probably be some mythological shit. Like Oni vs Harpy or something.

As opposed to defending against lava, thunder, water, earthquakes or just about anything else, which is a lot easier to defend against? Yes, flying things will have an easier time hitting. But what is makes them do that extra damage, that was the question.

Think of plain flying type as wind. Thats why they add normal to most birds, so fighting is regular against normal ass birbs. And its not very effective against wind, or special birds

Flying types should not be resistant to fighting type attacks. If anything they should be immune. They should be immune to contact attacks in general if we're using the logic "lol they can fly." Mach punch still hits the bird like normal.
