Even if they started their respective journeys at the same age (which in my head makes sense since its the same region with presumably the same rules applied to it as before) they'd still be two years younger on account of the time-skip between games.

I think one person here summed it best: it's not so much that kid protagonists are bad, it's just that it's a little more believable when a character is able to do the achievements a PC does the closer they are to adulthood.

I was 14 when Black & White came out and I definitely saw Hilbert and Hilda as being older than myself, no doubt. They're 16 in my book.

I was 17 when XY came out and saw Calem and Serena as being the same age as myself. They do NOT look like people who are still in elementary school.

And for the idiots that are bad at math, I'm 20 now

Probably the SM ones have 11 because nostalgia and red etc...
I hope that for the next we will able to play with more adult characters.
All in all Sun and Luna (yeah fits well with the character) are way cuter than Nate and Rosa.
