May's personality being a mix of all personality types rather than being pigeonholed into one character trait (like being extremely girly or extremely tomboyish, etc), is exactly what made her stand out in the anime. This is not even counting the fact that since she came first, a lot of the girls who came after her largely had similar personality quirks or re-do some similar development that the writers did with May the first time around.
Also, none of the other girls really have that clumsy/silly personality May has. It's hard to describe, really, but May has that ditzy charm where she goes from silly at one point to tough and headstrong in another.
