And if you count the Don battle tournaments as the same thing as Contests in terms of screentime, even then there were only 3 of them. And as said since everyone competed in them, Iris only got 1-2 battles in most before it focused on Ash, Cilan or the rivals battles.
Even outside the Contests, May still got a number of filler episodes, or eps that focused on her capture/evo of her 7 pokemon, or eps she shared spotlight with Ash, or eps Drew appeared outside a contest, or the eps she shared with Max, etc. Also May still to this day has more on-screen battles than any companion after Dawn.
