I'm under the impression that enough people that do give Pokemon qualities based on their human preferences, and rather than imagine a Pokemon in its animal sense have a more human-like interpretation of them, except with the appearance and some features of the Pokemon. Clearly there are people that do have some kind of animal fetish but I don't know what their deal is.
Either way I'm sure it can be summed up in simple terms, but the psychology itself is naturally more complex.
