The thing has its damn tongue wrapped around his face. That's not particularly threatening. Even the admittedly sterile and boring "bubble scarf" replacement would end up looking edgier than what we have, but lots of people still want that for some reason.
Or is it edgy because it's a ninja? Because the other ninja pokemon we have are much more stoic and threatening, with no goofy element like the tongue scarf to compensate for it.
The most likely reason it gets called edgy is because people are idiots and the word "Edgy" has lost its purpose.
