The trio were his favorite characters because they were essentially misfits who all got stuck in the particular circumstance of trying to get a fucking Pikachu

Which is even more odd considering Kabutops isn't just a "can swim" or just the typing thrown on for whatever reason, but it's actually a Pokemon that is fully capable of living underwater and is often portrayed swimming underwater and hunting underwater.
