Naming Cloud from Final Fantasy "Robert" is dumb.

Naming Ness from Mother "Cody" is dumb.
Naming your blank slate character after yourself that will be displayed to your friends and others who call you, or will call you by that name, serving your name's purpose, is not dumb.

Now, naming an Elder Scrolls or WoW character after yourself is super lame, because that's when you actually should come up with a fantasy name. An Argonian named "Jerry" sounds stupid as hell. But for Pokemon...

I don't get how naming Link Derek is any more dumber than naming Brendan Tom. They're both silent protagonist. One just screams a lot, while the other shouts commands for his Pokemon. If naming the latter anything you want is find, it should be fine for the former too.
