DPPt don't really look that good to me, but HGSS looks better. DPPt really have this weird awkward middle ground for both graphics and sound, yet HGSS and Gen 5 avoid it minus pixels in the Gen 5 stuff.

I don't know about the graphics overall, partly because I'm a huge fan of the GBA era, but Machamp's HGSS sprite is the best they've ever done. It is leagues beyond every other Machamp. FRLG comes close but something about HGSS just takes the cake.

This. Gen 4, or at least DP (if not Pt) have probably the worst graphics in the entire series. If I remember correctly this was around the time Nintendo was getting shit on for the Wii being subpar as well, prompting the whole fun vs graphics ""debate"". It seems they tried to fix it in Pt a bit though it was mostly palette changes. I'd argue as well that HGSS perfected them, before Gen 5 complexness downgraded everything except front sprites. Not much else to say about objective facts.

I miss the games having a constant frame rate, no constant transitions between areas, taking ages to load every time I go through a door.

I cringe every time I open or close out of my bag because I have to stare at 5 seconds worth of black screen every single time.

No, you just think that because it's what you grew up with. As someone who started at the beginning and played every generation, gen 4 is weak and the series has never looked better than it does on the 3DS.

This. HGSS perfected the spritework (Crystal is the second best), but the 3D is better, excluding certain pokemon. We just need games that maximize the 3D potential and make the models come alive more.

I don't disagree on the region itself, but all of the pixel stretching in gen 5 really doesn't look good imo. I mean stuff like the way the sprites are animated in battle, and the zoom in when going into buildings.
Even the overworld suffers from this since they had it viewed from a bit of a different angle, so stuff on the bottom of the screen was stretched while stuff on the top was squished, rather than gen 4 and below where it's basically just a straight grid of tiles on the screen. Gen 6 and forward don't suffer from some of these issues so much since they could use more models than sprites, due to the improved hardware.

in the earlier games your entire character was a stubby little chibi, now you're lumbering around with this giant head and dumb hat everywhere

also the colours and enviroent sprites felt "off"
gen 5 was a massive improvement everywhere

HGSS looked much better in terms of environment but the characters still looked weird

I liked the look of gen 2 as well but 3 was just so much "fuller" and more colourful while g/s was limited by the gameboy still

No, HGSS were better. And I unironically love the look of gen V's sprites. I think the hate for them is overblown. I honestly dislike the static sprites for Gen 4. Still better than the trash 3D models in X/Y though.

The bottom two Platinum screenshots look better than the BW/B2W2 ones.

Platinum didn't try too hard with the camera so there was no distortion and jagged edges.

It's a common mistake that more complicated and detailed graphics are the same as better graphics.

From a gameplay standpoint the increased focus on a three-dimensional overworld has added almost nothing to the gameplay, in fact it hinders it because it makes the games run slow and sluggish.

The Generation III games ran at a glorious 60 FPS at all times and are much more pleasurable to play because of that fact.

The battles are the only thing that have been improved by better graphics.

Even then I think the right side shows a more innovative Game Freak as it at least tried to do somethind different and jaggies aside it looks pretty dramatic. Gen 4 had a lot of things it kept around for traditions sake regardless of whether it made sense, which was dropped or properly adapted in future games.
