If you're a fan of more animalistic/monster-like Pokemon, then sure

If you're a fan of anthropormorphic/humanoid Pokemon, then you'll like the newer ones

More animalistic Pokemon tend to be not as marketable, unless they're cute, which is why the starters now start out as being more cute and animal-like then get more human-like when they evolve; basically the first stages are designed to appeal to the Pikachu crowd, and the final stages are designed to appeal to the Lucario crowd

Gen I to IV were all good. It is after that it took a nosedive. Having all the starters being humanoid in gen VI and VII was a mistake.Gen V starters were just shit in general.

There has, though not like the chart you've got.

Gen 2 was worse than gen 1, being duller rehashes of the gen 1 starters. Gen 3 was a huge improvement and the best the starters have ever been. Gen 4 was a decline when they started muddling the themes but was still good. Gen 5 was the nadir, three absolutely salvageable designs with terrible gameplay that turned a lot of people off the franchise entirely. Gen 6 was an improvement with more cohesive themes, and gen 7 fell back down again, with overall weak starters in terms of gameplay and design, though not nearly as bad as gen 5.

I'm mixed. Been playing since Red.

Gens I-IV were fantastic and need no defense, they're great. From Gen V onward I think the *overall* designs have been fine, except maybe Gen V's. But they're a bit *too* humanoid. I don't mind bipedal starters as long as they still hunch over and have animal-like limbs to imply they're merely standing up for battle.

So if starters like Incineroar and Chesnaught and Delphox are shown as rambling on all fours or maybe acting at least feral and menacing like you'd expect those animals they're based on to be, I'm fine with it and their actions help a lot. I just wish the designs was a BIT more animalistic.

But they're not?.
Take Incineraor for an example. All its movement is very human-like. The description of its personality is way too much too, with how it is stated to put on a tough guy act just so human kids will idolize and that it is actually sentimental inside.

That and Incineroar looks pretty ferocious by pokemon standards in the movie 20 trailer like you'd expect a tiger-based mon to be - bipedal or not - so there's that.

I feel bad for Decidueye now that I think on it, it suffers a ton from the humanoid problem. Probably more than Incineroar or Primarina.

Also for me the worst starters are the gen 2 ones, except for feraligart, they were incredible underdesigned, for me typhlosion is just a big badger with fire in his shoulders and meganium is just a green dinosaur with a flower on his neck.
