Why didn't they bother to give the protags any facial expressions aside from that soulless smile? Even literal who's aka trainer classes have them.

They have them though, not using them most of the time was a conscious decision (when Koko saves MC, when Nihilego appears...). Dunno why though.

These are things which would take a minuscule amount of time to implement, yet they are absent from the

This. They did bother to make the expressions and implement them at certain points, but they used them very scarcely for some reason. GF works in mysterious, stupid ways.
