>>325864541 is bulky offense. A few mons have reliable recovery. Most are stuck on a timer, but still have enough natural bulk (everything had equivalent of 252 EVs in everything) to switch into resisted hits and overall take a few hits to KO. Sleep is overpowered as hell this gen and every good team has a sleep lead. On contrary setup sweepers are at their lowest in Pokemon's history because of crit mechanics and most of them prefer resorting to Agility, which also nullifies speed drops from Paralysis, a status that's frequently spammed via Thunder Wave and Body Slam.
Gen 2 is so stally because it's mostly the same, except for several firepower nerfs (lowered SpA on physically based mixed attackers, Hyper Beam's glitch fix), everything getting Curse for Atk+Def setup, introduction of Leftovers and introduction of Sleep Talk, which, when calling Rest, would instantly refill the mon's HP with no drawbacks instead of doing nothing like in later gens.
