Most didn't like max because he didn't really have anything going for his character that makes him stand out. I mean he doesn't really do anything too interesting. He doesn't even have any of his own pokemon because he's too young and if you removed him advanced generation wouldn't have changed much at all. Give all his smart battle analysis to Brock and divide his whimsical childish moments between may and ash and the series is pretty much the same. Because he has no positive aspects to him that make him stand out and he's not even a cute girl many people resent him. I personally didn't mind him that much at first because it's funny to see someone be a condescending jerk to ash, all while knowing they're technically correct.. but he only does that in the firs few episodes when he met ash and then decides to respect and admire ash because we couldn't have him continue to be a smug asshole towards our precious snowflake main character... that might make people realize that ash isn't a good trainer.
