The music and atmosphere are doubtless nostalgic for anyone who played them as children, but as a newcomer I really think you'd have more fun with HGSS. It's easily the best of the three remakes so far. You can even unlock the old chiptune tracks at the end of the game which can be played instead of the updated themes.
Only play the originals if you want some insight into the history of Pokemon.
