Red preserves the original balance of a typed starter by choice and it's my general go-to for a Pokemon classic. Yellow lets you get everyone, sure, but some of the other balance is lost. Gym leader levels are much higher and require more grinding, but some Pokemon learn moves earlier or unlock extra moves, like Fly for Charizard. I dunno, as much as I enjoyed smashing through Yellow last year I'm liking Red a lot more right now.
