The moves and abilities weren't balanced with a roguelike in mind, so you could easily spam something that'd be punished in the main games and have at it. The regular attack is also strong enough to carry you throughout a good portion of the game.

Grovyle is the Lucina of Pokemon, a flat and boring character that's way too focused on getting the job done instead of actually having any semblance of personality, but still manages to have a ton of fans for some reason (in Lucina's case cuteness, Grovyle being cool and "edgy" for lack of a better term)
Meanwhile Dusknoir has an actual reason to do what he did and develops as a character, changing who he is throughout the course of the Special Episode.
