It's just that there is more human character merch now than ever. If you remember throughout the 2000's we barely got any human character merch at all. There was a Dawn anime figure in 2007 but not much else for a while.

You guys are forgetting how much merch N had.

That boy seriously got a lot of merch. Granted, he doesn't have figures like Lillie does (N got a Nendo, two different similar figures and one that resembles his in-game sprite), but he also got stickers, clearfiles, mugs, notepads, even a freaking WATCH.

Lillie isn't the first character they've shilled this hard, she's just the first girl to get the treatment.

Well, she's pretty much the main character in SM (the player doesn't really count considering he/she doesn't have any personality), and I think that's the first time we get that in a Pokémon game.

They capitalized on it with ORAS Steven too, it's just that with him they already knew he had a colossal fanbase since he wasn't a new character.
