Back then there was a ton of ambiguity simply because the internet wasn't an all knowing and all present tool at the time.

Now, this is anecdotal evidence, but I gave my copy of white 2 to my kid cousin and he went nuts seeing the final evolution of tepig, as he asked what all the starters evolved to before he picked in his own game. The only reason he seems less cool to you is because you're looking through rose tinted glasses. This kid hadn't played a pokemon game before and started on V as if the last 4 gens didn't exist to him.
