That place holder name, ''Stars'' was actually just a fake rumor, that people liked and dubbed the third version as that, just like people though that the third version of BW was going to be ''Gray'' and XY was going to be ''Z''.

Gray and Z makes sense but why did people start to associate Sun and Moon with Stars?

i think Galaxy or Space would be better name for a Sun and Moon third version.

Eurogamer just made up the rumor because they were salty of sun and moon releasing 5 days late in Europe.

So said this right before the release to affect sales

But if USM disspoints in sales I can see them porting it to the switch

There were a few other fake names thrown around, like "eclipse", but stars probably stuck because it's short and fits the "things in space" theme better than "Earth".
