While we're at it, let's completely rework normal type, because I'm kind of sick of certain moves like explosion being normal type/sick of normal type in general.
Explosion should be fire type, self destruct could be steel type, but hyper beam probably shouldn't change. Not sure what type would fit it better anyway.

god no. the majority of pokemon that use, let alone learn explosion and self-destruct are physical attackers.
Off the top of my head, the only special attacker that will ever explode is electrode. And that's because it's so bad it can't do much else.

stronger than explosion at 50%+ health, weaker otherwise

elemental explosions could be limited distribution for plausible types (like fire, electric etc.)

honestly it's kinda sad Electrode's explosions are so weak, despite it being a signature ability of the line

it really should get a signature special electric explosion or else an ability that maximizes it's attack stat (belly drum style) before exploding

Nah. Explosion should remain normal, because it's 260 base power and is a TM. Self-Destruct has much smaller distribution and is a lower base power. giving it a non-normal typing gives it some kind of niche over explosion, regardless of it still being generally worse.
