Actually, it's more that he doesn't give up, you don't always achieve your goals on the first try, sometimes it's takes many failures to reach it, he made it to the finals and came second which is his best so far.

That and if he won they won't really have a reason to carry on with his story cause he achieved what he was wanting to do.

His goal is to be a Pokemon Master - which means beating everything and becoming a Master at everything;

- All the Pokemon encountered/captured
- All the gyms defeated
- Champion of every region

Etc...

So he could technically win and still be considered a failure.

I wouldn't be mad if that happens. Anime Lillie has been steadily getting better and has shown to be a remarkable and talented battler. If she gets a full team and challenges Ash and win, I'll be OK with it. Better that than what we've gotten for DP and XY.
