I feel like they had a three stage evolution planned but scrapped one of them, cause right now it goes Pawn -> Bishop and I feel like there should be a third called like King something.

the japanese name for bisharp doesn't reference chess at all if i remember correctly, nor any board game

It sounds wrong because of this guy.

Both introduced in gen 5.

And Pawniard could be a name for another evolution in its line e.g. purrloin -> pawniard -> liepard

They're samurai-bandits in japan, nothing to do with chess. It's just their name in the west that makes that assumption.

Regardless, it would be cool for gamefreak to acknowledge what these mons are associated with in the west and make a king/queen evo because of it.

The English localization used the wrong "koma" for Komatana. It's not koma (shogi pieces), but komagire (small pieces). That's why we ended up with Pawniard.

Komatana is komagire + katana (blade).
