The west side is dry lava rock highlands, coast with hotels carving little green patches out of the rock, and lava desert. There is technically a barren area to the southwest, but that's due to acid rain from the volcano. Not true desert conditions.
That's all real world autism though and doesn't matter. Bulu just got pissed at the old kahuna for forming team skull and cursed the place with rain.
