Lucas as protag with Turtwig so Dawn gets Piplup and Barry gets Chimchar. Serena as protag with Fennekin so Calem gets Froakie and Shauna gets Chespin.

Barry: Chimchar
Dawn: Piplup

Calem: Chespin
Serena: Fennekin

Now, I don't like Lucas as the protag. Dawn fits the protag role better, but Lucas has better sinergy with Barry. I also like Calem with Froakie, but we were shown that the actual canon starter is Chespin.

The canon is everything is canon because of multiverse shenanigans, which is how PvP trading and battle works, most notably with Legendaries and Mythicals.

The whole game literally revolves around infinite possibilities, whether it be which protag you chose, what starters were picked, what they look like in XYSM, and what mons they use. Hell, games like ORAS, BW and BW2 flat out talk about an alternate universe where events play out differently, alluding to the opposite versions and remake retcons, and ingame items and locations like the C-Gear/Entralink and PSS let you communicate with alternate versions of the protagonists.
