Most people agree that GSC/HGSS are the best games in the franchise. A decent chunk of /vp/ also thinks so but nowadays there are so many contrarians looking to complain that they'll insist otherwise.

GSC only get praise because of how horrible RBY were in retrospect and the bar was set pretty low. Had Gen 1 actually been good, Gen 2 wouldn't have so many cocksuckers. And name one thing that HGSS did to actually improve the core gameplay of Gen 2 that wasn't a fluff mechanic like walking Pokemon or the Pokeathlon

That's irrelevant to the question. Most of the core gameplay is identical for every Pokemon in the series, the only things left to make the games more interesting are those very same gimmicks that were being derided.

Not gonna lie, These games gave me much enjoyment whenever I started getting back into pokemon again. Was I an idiot for buying Heartgold, beating the game, then buying Soulsilver thinking that it was a completely different game altogether? Keep in mind that I skipped an entire generation and played Emerald for a good 5 or so years before getting the games

The level curve was a side-effect of giving the player too much freedom after Ecruteak, it's probably why the games are more linear now than back before the GBA.

I guess. I've personally never found it to be an issue, usually teams of 5-6 are around 9-10 levels below the Champion in every Exp Shareless game unless you grind.
