Evolves through "time travel". It's a cross-gen evolution that occurs when transferring from a previous gen to the current one.
Evolves by releasing it. It comes back in a random encounter and rejoins you, stronger than before. Think Gau from Final Fantasy VI and how he learns new moves. If you wanted to release it for real, then you have the option to turn it away.
Evolves by getting hit by specific attacks. For example, your pokemon is made of flamable material and evolves into a fire type after it's hit by a fire attack, or your normal type pokemon's psychic powers awaken after it's hit with a psychic move.
