So if the gen 8 fire starter is based off of a member of the Chinese zodiac, will everyone finally agree that the two that 'don't fit' are close enough and that fire starters are based on the zodiac?
We have more evidence to support it than against it, and i think if gen 8 gives us an obvious zodiac based fire starter it should finally end this stupid debate.

I just want it to be confirmed one way or the other, the 4-5 (depending on who you ask it's 4 or 5) ones that can clearly be related to the zodiac are coincidence, or the 1-2 (again, depending on who you ask) that are very arguable representations are just poor representations of their zodiac counterpart. I just want a clear sign, and for me if the gen 8 starter is obviously a zodiac based creature, that'll be enough for me. Or again, if it isn't, and it's just coincidence would be fine too.

I want to make something clear for the anons reading this:

The Zodiac pattern has only been planned since gen 3. Everyone knows that gamefreak didn't expect any more games after gen 2; they didn't have any set patterns and were expecting it to fizzle out. In gen 3, they realized there were going to be many more gens, so they instituted a system that fit with the previous starters.

Now, we know they could have only started seriously using the zodiac as a basis in gen 3 for another reason: the beta gen 2 starters. As some may know, the original starters for gen 2 were very different. Chikorita was just a head, the water starter was unrecognizable, and the fire starter was... a bear. Not a zodiac animal.

Typhlosion likely took some design choices from the earlier starter's final evo, and Cyndaquil was used for whatever reason may be, but they added with care Cyndaquil's species name: Hinezumi in japanese, fire mouse in english. Both are explicitly mice.

When you take this assumption and then look at gens 3 - 7 as the MAIN zodiac reps, you'll see that the only one that doesn't explicitly fit is Delphox. There has been a lot of debate about this one already, but I think it's safe to say that they included it as a fox instead of a dog solely to use the Japanese myths of foxes alongside it fitting well enough into the Zodiac.

When you look that they continued and gave us our first tiger mon as a fire starter, it shows that they are obviously still on the zodiac.

So, to recap (and tl;dr:)
>Charizard and Typhlosion were included retroactively
>the zodiac theme started mostly in gen 3 and continues to this day
>Delphox represents the dog position because they thought it was "close enough"

I feel that this, after being described as such, is perfectly valid.

You do realize most people in the world don't even know that there's a difference between foxes and dogs? And it's as much a difference as a dog and a coyote or jackal - which everyone thinks are just dogs anyway. So why not use a fox, which already has a lot of presence in japan, and use that instead to be able to make it more interesting?

For me personally, as soon as they put one that doesn't obviously pass, I'll believe the zodiac is gonezo. That means Zebra is in for horse because only people who care about semantics would say it's not a horse, that means chinchilla is in for rabbit because they're close enough and it's interesting, but giraffe isn't going to work for horse, and rhino isn't going to work for bull. What could Gamefreak learn and incorporate from Fossil Fighters?

For instance, Difficulty settings and Quest Logs are things in most rpgs, and in need of copying.
Multiple save files as well but there may be technological limitations since most of that space is probably used for box storage. And they're not incentivized to fix it because Bank is a "fix" that makes extra money.

The "enough" part, because where you draw the line around "enough" is completely arbitrary. Other people could say it ISN'T close enough and they'd have just as much of a point.
I personally happen to believe the zodiac theory, but since there is no clear-cut standard of "close enough" you ARE basically saying "a fox is a dog because I said so" whether you're correct or not.

Also, the argument was whether or not a fox is a dog, not whether both are classified under the same taxonomic family. A fox is not a dog. A dog is not a fox. Not all members of Canidae are dogs. If you're going to stretch the Zodiac connection to family, why not go further? Are they going to be the same thing just because they're mammals? Chordates? Eukaryotes? Where do you draw the line? If you make it arbitrarily any clade or classification beyond Genus, you're going to have people disagreeing with you.

I personally think the Zodiac is a very vague template they may refer to if they want, but I don't think they're actually trying to accurately represent anything in particular.

To actually answer OP's question instead of going off tangent discussing whether foxes are dogs or whether Cyndaquil is a rat or not: NO.
Until all doubts are cleared away, until all 12 of the zodiac are made into Fire starter, this theory is still just that - a theory. You "might be correct" than not, but it is not "confirmed" until the twelfth and the last one are done.

Also, I find it ironic that OP himself consider there are two that "doesn't fit". Usually people like you try to argue that it does fit, just not normally.
