It also forces you out of your comfort zone to try new Pokemon that you might not necessarily like at first glance. I was one of those people that hated how the Vanillite line looked, but I ended up using one just to see what it could do. It ended up being one of the MVPs of the team, and now I love the line.
That isn't to say that having a mixed gen dex is a bad thing. GF was doing it right for gens II-IV and B2/W2, but they completely screwed it over for X/Y and S/M. For the former, the high number of available Pokemon slightly overshadowed the Kalos-native mons. As for the latter, the small number of Alola mons along with their relative scarcity just pushes them farther from the limelight. If GF wants to make less Pokemon per gen so that they don't reach the big 1000, fine. What they do make should be given more presence so that the Pokemon actually feel like they belong to the region.
