If I were to describe the XY series with one word, it would be "pretentious".

The other anime series knew that they were just glorified commercials and fully embraced it.

The XY series on the other hand, tried to mask this with flashy shonen-esque fight scenes and a "romance subplot" that went absolutely nowhere.

Fuck Tetsuo Yajima, and fuck the XY series.

XY wanted to be something unique, deep and special. But the writers lacked the ability to actually BE unique, deep and special.

The closest they came to that was with Alain and the ME specials, and they had to force Alain to be Ash's rival when Ash had literally no one else who could challenge him.

Honestly, Serena was handled well, if you think about it. Her main appeal was to be a waifubait love interest, to go hand-in-hand with the audience power fantasy that is XY Ash. Character, interactions with others, her goals, and everything else are secondary to that.

The fact that you have a new generation of people desperately begging for Serena to return, and that AmourShipping is ridiculously popular, shows that they succeeded. Up until then, Shota was just a fanboy. He only got gud by the eighth Badge, and they had to make Ash a whiny pissbaby to make it work. Shota was a great character, but he wasn't a good rival until the League managed to show off his strengths. And even by then, it was clear that he only existed to lose to Ash.
