That is actually interesting, and would explain why low functioning individuals don't generally improve themselves...it's cause they actually can't improve themselves.
Kind of makes me more sympathetic at this point. I actually feel bad for these people.
Is the proper response to show them this in the slim hope that they become enlightened, or just keep enabling the self-righteous behavior.
I'd hate to do the ladder, but I don't wanna make those people feel bad either. They're already mentally unstable enough as it is.
